Your resume describes your qualifications and what makes you unique. To stand out among other applicants, you need a resume that markets your strengths and matches for the job. Here I'm gonna tell you what all is important to add in your resume. 😄

1. HTML/CSS

As a web developer, you’ll need to understand the basics of coding and markup language.

Of all markup languages, HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the standard.

HTML forms practically every web page on the Internet as we know it. How a website function depends on the way a developer writes the HTML.

But for your website to actually display as a website, you’ll rely on CSS.

2. JavaScript

As you master HTML and CSS, eventually you’ll want to learn JavaScript.

JavaScript is a higher-level programming language. It makes websites more interactive and functional.

Create Websites for the Future

The web development industry is taking off. Standards are growing higher and more rigid. And with that, there will be higher expectations for the websites you make and the clients you work for.

3. Photoshop

As a web developer, you’ll want to know your way around Photoshop. It’ll not only make your life easier, but it’ll help you perform better and faster.

You’ll have plenty of fun editing, designing, and stylizing your websites with Photoshop. You may even design a handful of banners and logos for clients throughout your career.

But your Photoshop skills will extend far beyond appearances.

4. WordPress

Nearly 75 million websites function on WordPress alone. That’s more than 25% of the Internet altogether.

WordPress is a free content management system. It’s excellent for both beginners and for established web developers, as well.

It’s relatively easy to use since you can edit and modify web pages, add plugins, and run tests for bugs. There’s also the Yoast feature which will help you with SEO.

5. Analytical Skills

If your web developer skills are strong, you’ll create successful websites. But there’s a marketing side to the job that few people truly understand.

Of course, the most successful websites are the most functional.

But consumer behaviours are always changing. So, your design, coding, and development skills will always evolve to satisfy the ever-changing consumer.

Common Mistakes Made By Web Developers And How To Avoid Them

Using Non-Responsive Design

Nowadays, Not keeping RWD(Responsive Web Design) in mind will result in a large website displayed in a small screen with small buttons making it difficult for the end-user to read the content or click on the horizontal scrollbar along with many other discrepancies, all of which will lead to bad user experience.

Depending on Website Builder Tools

Many companies nowadays offer tools using which you can easily build a website with drag and drop features. The problem with those tools lies in the backend. Each design decision adds multiple lines of code that makes the website slower and with time, this may cause performance issues and impact critical functionalities.

Using Outdated HTML

It is rightly said that old habits are difficult to get rid of. In earlier versions of HTML, the latest Markup options were not available that makes the job easier. Developers who started coding since earlier days still have the habit of using lots or spans and ‘&nbps’s which not only increases the line of code but also causes layout issues in updated browsers like Microsoft Edge.

Insufficient Input Validation

Web developers often make the mistake of ignoring form validation and trust in user input. End-users are human, and mistakes happen with them also. Incomplete form validation may result in a mistyped alphabet in the phone number field or an incorrect email format missing the ‘.’ or ‘@’. All these leading to incorrect data submitted by the user that may lead to failed delivery of information to the user’s physical or online address.

Cross Browser Compatibility Issues

Those days are long gone when the Internet Explorer was the only browser available to access websites. At present, apart from the big shots like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, there are hundreds of desktop and mobile browsers, even some device-specific browsers that are preferred by users for accessing websites.

Use cloud testing platforms like SOASTA CloudTest which provides you with the opportunity to quickly and seamlessly test your website on multiple browsers simultaneously. Find out any CSS or HTML issues that are causing breakage in any specific browser and fix the issues by replacing them or adding vendor-specific codes.
